Gaming performance issues with decent PC

So as the title says I've been suffering bad performance on my PC which is strange considering my specs.

My system:
i5 4460
8GB kingston ram
R9 270X 2GB

When I first built the system (2015 march) I had no issues and the computer ran very smooth. However the performance "decayed" over the years.

Take GTA V for example, I was able to play very smoothly 60+ fps with near highest settings, now I have slightly reduced settings compared to before but I suffer a lot of stuttering, sometimes my surroundings would not load when I drive in a car because it doesn't render fast enough. I recently started playing fortnite and even this game suffered sometimes. 1/5 times on the drop I would stutter and I would also stutter in fights.

I've seen benchmarks and everyone seems to have great fps at ultra settings on GTA with similar specs or worse (e.g 750ti)

I have updated my drivers consistently but see no improvement.

I do take this computer travelling occasionally (I take out the gpu so it is definitely not damaged) and it might have damaged the hard drive (shaking in cars/planes)

However I read a bunch of stuff online and apparently hard drive speed is a small factor in determining fps.

I also thought MAYBE the fact that my card is AMD means that games are not quite optimised.

I am thinking of upgrading my GPU very soon but not too sure because of rumors of a new nvidia gpu in late 2018. I can either upgrade to a 1060 now or wait for a new card. waiting for a new card seems more "future proof" than buying a card now considering 1060 has been out for nearly a year now.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I found a good deal on a Titan Xp($1,000) and almost bought it yesterday(currently have a 1070 ti in my desktop and dual 1070's in my laptop)... but think i'm going to hold off also. Just make sure you get one of those new cards right as they're available. There's a good chance they are going to sell out quickly.

I use the EVGA hadron air, psu comes with the case, its 500W

mobo is h81 msi mini itx

I have MSI afterburner and temps are OK

1060 for 240GBP doesnt seem bad either, thats the price it was at when it was released.

I have the same case(Hadron Air). It has a i5-4690k, 16gb & a GTX 1070 Ti FTW2 in it. Was considering upgrading it to Coffee Lake, but it still performs just fine and handles any game just fine.

As far as the next gen nVidia cards go... considering the cost increase to produce GDDR6, the cards are most likely going to be pricey. There's a good chance they'll sell out quickly and be marked up on eBay as well.

Hello tamage.

I have similar issue in gta5 with fx8370 @ 4.7.

Ssd made no difference, nor is it gpu. I am testing in lowest settings and lowest resolution and the frame dips occur the same at the same map locations.

It's bizarre.

I don't think its only a GTA problem because I get some issues in other games as well, although GTA was noticeably worse.

Although I should upgrade my GPU because its not capable of running top-end games like battlefield 1 or PUBG anymore. PUBG is literally unplayable at 10-30 fps with this card right now

I could be wrong but most games (to my knowledge) are better optimised for nvidia than amd, gtx 760 is of slightly higher power to r9 270x but it performs significantly better on PUBG (more than double the fps) and a bunch of other games. software is also far better for nvidia.

nvidia cards every generation gets a huge performance boost so it wouldn't really make sense to buy a 1060 right now, assuming that rumors of its release are true.

HOWEVER, if the cards wont be released within 2018 then I won't wait.

I'm trying to get as much info as I could on the release date so I can make an informed decision.

As for price, it really isn't an issue unless (the 1060 counter part - 1160 or 2060) performance per dollar is absolutely terrible. For GPUs, the prices do rise but the extra power goes along to match it. So it would make sense to buy a newer card because it would be better for the future

I'm still trying hard to find logic in this thread. No offense. Op says that gta v performance got worse over a period of time in the same hardware. Also the claim is that the Temps are fine. But it's not mentioned how much the Temps are. Secondly we are bashing amd cards when on the same card you used to achieve better performance in the past.

To me it looks like your psu is not providing enough power to your card. Either that or your card has lived its life. But saying that nvidia is better than amd solely on the observations in your pc performance is a bit harsh imo.

I have r9 270x for 3 4 years now. Sapphire. It's on my old phenom 2 720 be system. My cpu is a huge bottleneck. Your cpu is very good. I can run most games at 1080p high settings but gta v of course coz it needs 4 cores to run properly but games like dark souls skyrim fallout eso etc still run at highest settings at 50 to 60 fps. You should be getting above 60 fps at all times in gta v on your pc at 1080p high. Check YouTube.

Sorry I'm typing this on phone so excuse any typos plz

Temps in game are around 50-60, it can change if I turn up the fan.

My rig pulls around 320W and my psu is 500W

When I compared nvidia and amd I did say I could be wrong, but given the example of PUBG it would make sense to get an nvidia card because that is one of the games I'd like to play on this rig.

I had guessed it was a lack of vram which was why I considered an upgrade.

This guy has a very weak CPU and he gets 35 to 45 in very high 1080p. OP's CPU is much much better. That and reducing the settings to high may get him above 60 FPS.

Anyway, my point was that first his issue should be found out and resolved. Given that he used to play well on this HW and its performance reduced over a period of time tells me that there is something wrong with the system. Upgrading the graphics card is one solution. But, OP could you please also give us the make and model of your PSU?

I said above that the PSU comes with the hadron air.

It is not separate, and is screwed into the case by EVGA.

My mobo is not great though, do you think it will limit the performance of gddr6?
