I have this predicament. As I’m moving into the work force, I find myself in a situation where my current laptop isn’t the most ideal for what I am wanting to do. I do a lot of photo and video editing, but also want to play the occasional game like civ 5 or star craft 2, or other strategy type games. I’m wanting to upgrade from my laptop that has a i7-6700HQ, 960m, and 16gb of ram. What are some good cheap parts to be looking for/try to have in my build? My budget is a broke college student, so around $200-$300. A seemingly impossible task, especially with ridiculous GPU prices skewing everything, but eBay and Craigslist are my friend. Are there any excellent cheap parts out there that people often overlook? I have 0 experience building and want to use my money effectively. I was considering finding a mostly built system already and just transplanting parts as I upgrade and get more experience. Thanks in advance

Edit: Sorry guys, I wasn’t super clear on this. I’m wanting to move to a desktop computer, not upgrade my laptop.

You have a reasonably modern laptop with decent specs. The GPU is mostly likely soldered to the motherboard and can't be changed out. Even if the CPU is in a socket, a different CPU probably won't be compatible with the motherboard and/or thermals/cooling won't be in spec. So, your upgraded choices are really limited to RAM and storage drives.
