Since you're new it's probably best you take it slow in the start. So start with increasing the core speed by maybe 20Mhz. If you don't see any artefacts while stress testing with that OC on, you should be good to go on to the next one. Now apply 40Mhz. Do this until you reach a point where either your Nvidia driver crashes or you see artefacts on the monitor. Then you know you've gone a bit too far. Now it's time to add a little more juice. Since it's MSI afterburner and you probably haven't allowed it to anything else than the standard, you should be good to just max out the Core voltage slider. This should add 0.1v to the core. This will most likely make the core OC stable, however is not guaranteed.

When you've finally found a stable core OC, you're ready to move onto the memory OC'ing. Same procedure as with the core, however you can increase with like 50-100Mhz a time this tie around. My own 980ti got a 450mhz+ on the memory and most other cards i've had has gone past 300Mhz easily.
Again. Same story as with the core. When you start to see artefacts on the screen you known you've gone a little too far with the OC and you have to dial it back a little.

This is basically how you'll go by OC'ing your 970.

So for a quick recap.

Core clock
-------------------------
Increase with 10-20Mhz increments
When it gets unstable, max out the core voltage slider to 100mv (0.1v)

Memory clock
------------------------
Increase with 50-100Mhz increments until it gets unstable.
Of course you'll increase with less than 50-100 when you are about to reach the end, but you get the drill.

Cheers
