I received a Dell optiplex 380 from an auction and am planning on using it to turn it into a well working modern PC. When I got it, it had the password on a note card for the Windows XP professional account. I lost the card later and now I'm stuck with a locked PC that has barely any CPU power and around 2 gb of RAM... I looked up how to get in without the password and nothing worked. I didn't try the Linux USB drive thing tho. I want to know if I can buy an SSD(put Windows on it after taking the HDD out) that will be compatible with it. I read that you need to update the bios but I don't know how to do this... Also will new ram be compatible with the old CPU....

It's weird that the Dell support says 4 gb ram but when I checked on the PC it said like 2. It's probable the previous owner changed it like he changed it to windows XP pro.

Because the pc is locked with a password, we can't help. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2317968/read-passwords-lock-codes-pin-numbers.html

I will add though that the only way to turn a 10 year old pc into a modern pc is to buy a new pc. I still have my c2d rig running but beyond lower end/old games or basic tasks, you won't get much out of it. I hope you didn't spend more than $50 on that, because $50 could have gotten a c2q version.
