Ryzen 5 1600 or i5 8400 with 2400hz RAM?

Ok guys I'm really confused about selecting the right cpu. I already have 16gb ballistic ddr4 2400mt/s ram which i cannot change. The reason i bought this because i was gonno pair it with i5 7500. Then i changed my mind and bought i5 8400. The new coffee lake motherboard is out but to get a decent one i need to spend at least £80+.

I just saw r5 1600 for £130 only where i5 8400 is £150. And a decent motherboard can be bought for £70 for r5. So my question is should i stick with i5 8400. Or should i get r5 1600. Keep in mind i cannot change my ram but i can change my cpu. Saving some money could help me with other parts.
This is a gaming pc & will be paired with gtx 1060 6gb. I'll also be using it for regular tasks. Thanks

if you keep the ram 2400 you should keep the I5.
If you check out comparisons between the two CPUs on YouTube, you can see than normaly they use 3200 RAM and both CPU are very similar.
With your 2400 RAM, your I5 8400 stays the same and Ryzen 5 1600 drops a 10% aprox.

The reason is the existence of the "infinite fabric" that connects different Ryzen cores and that runs at the speed of RAM. In Intel this problem does not exist and the RAM influences much less.

Unless you're going to stream, the i5 8400 is better for gaming purposes.
It's also less dependent on RAM speeds than Ryzen.

You can check out comparisons between the two CPUs on YouTube. But the bottom line is, the i5 is better. It's up to you if those extra FPS are worth the extra money.
