Hello all,
New to these forums though I've always referred to Tom's for making IT decisions. I wanted to say that I did my due diligence before posting and searched for what I wanted however the specifics alone provided very minimal results. So here I come humbeled to these forums asking the help of the community with the following.

Background:
-15 years IT networking experience

Current system:
Synology Nas 10TB, email, web hosting, domain services, 10 camera security system, VPN access, file/printer, media, photo, PC/device backup services.

Situation:
Sister built a house and wanted me to provide the technology/security portion. IP cameras and a NAS is nothing. I was thinking though, I wanted to upgrade and install a server that would provide all of the above + PC virtualization. I essentially want to host a server where all devices, laptops and such would utilize a Citrix like thin client connection to a server hosted desktop.
Essentially all devices (PC's, smart mirrors, tablets) would have a login to the users desktop hosted on the server. Centralized, easy to admin/patch while being connected via VPN to my other locations.

Now I have enough experience within IT to perform this from research, I am just curious if anyone has thought about or tried this before. It would essentially be a conglomerate of projects from the web. I am just curious if anyone else has performed similar projects.

Solution
In a business environment, thin clients sort of make sense. They're not any cheaper, though.

In a residential situation, they really don't. The uses for the systems are too varied, and at least one of those uses would really suffer in that environment - games.

Ohh, Im sorry, I forgot to explain, I would be building a new server from scratch. I can perform all the work, cabinet installation, line runs copper/fiber, switch programming, Wifi, sec camera installation and all programming. I would expect that the Synology NAS would not have the hardware to perform this as I have searched. Wish it did though, Id run a crypto node off it ;)
I have full intentions if needed of buying a server, multi cpu and have he experience of setting them up.. Now my question is if anyone has done this type of setup before, would you run Windows or a Linux platform? Essentially the hardware is not a problem, I can get an older server and rebuild it to create what is required.
