Looking to upgrade my HDD with an SSD

I run a desktop with Windows 10. I have a 1TB HHD of which only 204gb is used and 727gb is free.
I want to speed up my pc by adding an SSD. As I have lots of free space and don't want to spend too much, could someone recommend what size SSD I need ?

No problem.

A 240/250GB SSD or larger.
The Crucial MX500 is a good choice.

Then, you need to get the OS and applications on the SSD.
Either cloning or a clean install.
We can go into details for both options.

What OS is this?
I wouldn't go for less than 240 - 250 SSD in any case and you could easily clone your drive to it. A 500GB would be even better but even with 240 - 250GB you could spread files over both drives by at least keep or transfer personal files to HD and keep them there. It's also possible with most programs/games to (mostly) install them to HDD while running from SSD.

Thanks for that, I assume then, if I install a 250gb SSD and run it together with my HDD, then I would still have lots of spare storage space and the pc would operate at a better speed too.

Yes, you are right, better startup times, faster program start response and all that jazz. After you successfully transfer BOOT disk to it, you can clean up OS and it's partitions from HDD and save even more space. I would also suggest a clean OS install on SSD and also largest programs/games pointing them to partitioned HDD. Make second partition on HDD just for keeping personal files and backups.
