My computer is acting weird. Might be virus (virus scan shows clean), might be hardware. The motherboard and GPU is several years old and has faulty audio. I have not built a completely new system in several years. As a result I have very outdated knowledge of today's PC builds and have been too busy lately to do too much research. I will still do some research, but need some good jumping off point to dive into. I want to upgrade everything but the computer case, monitor, and PSU. Look below for details.

Approximate Purchase Date: this week or the next (the closer the better)

Budget Range: $400-900 Before shipping and rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: surfing the internet, watching videos, gaming (should be built to handle high graphics gaming)

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade:
1. CPU (Z370 chipset)
2. GPU. Are there any consumer GPUs that support 10-bit color depth? Currently looking at EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SSC GAMING.
3. Motherboard (ATX). Currently looking at MSI Z370 GAMING M5.
4. RAM (8-16gb). Currently looking at Corsair Dominator Platinum Series 16GB (2 x 8GB).

Parts not upgraded:
1. EVGA SuperNOVA 750 P2, 80+ PLATINUM 750W (bought this on september 25, 2016).
2. Corsair Carbide Clear 400C Compact Mid-Tower Case, that I want to keep.
3. BenQ ZOWIE EC2-A E-Sports Ergonomic Optical Gaming Mouse when I used to play more games.

Do you need to buy OS: No, I bought a back-up USB copy of Windows 10.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon.com, Newegg.com (I don't know of a lot of websites, if you recommend some different ones, that's fine)

Location: Kansas City, Kansas/Missouri, USA

Parts Preferences: I have only used Intel CPU, and would prefer Intel CPU. I am thinking of trying out an Nvidia graphics card since I have never got one before.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: It would be good to have a build that is compatible for SLI or Crossfire, but I am not sure if I will need it.

Your Monitor Resolution: 2560x1440 (Qnix, the cheap Korean stuff). Has DVI-D interface.

Additional Comments: I want a quiet PC, not too much flashy lights. I can deal with flashy lights if that is the most optimal build according to my requirements.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: faulty audio port, audio sounding weird in general, robotic beeps coming from headphones rarely. Certain types of videos are not playing in Firefox, but work in other browsers. I have tried uninstalling Firefox completely and reinstalling. I was still using Windows 7, and I am going to reformat the SSD boot drive for Windows 10.

Solution
You seem to already know your way around the parts. I'd recommend an i5-8600K if you want a Z370 mobo. But if you also want the expensive Dominator RAM then I think you might go over budget.

The GTX 1060 does not support SLI, only GTX 1070 and up.

The EVGA GTX 1060 6G SSC is overpriced at the moment. But the Gigabyte Windforce OC is just as good for less.

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor ($215.00 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG - H5 Universal 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($41.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - Z370 GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($169.49 @ SuperBiiz)

For 1440p GTX1070Ti is recommended. i5-8600 and GTX1070Ti combo will perform nearly 55% better than i5-8600K and GTX1060 combo which is a huge gain.

You wrote you have an OS on flash drive. How aout backing up your data and making a new windows install along with audio drivers and video codecs. It could solve your problems. You could keep your PC and upgrade the graphics card for gaming or get a USB sound card to solve audio problems.

If you insist on buying new, at least be sure to sell your used parts.

Your case can accommodate large (170mm high) air coolers, I am sure you will be able to create a silent build in it. Look for the Thermalright Macho Rev. B, or the above mentioned Cryorig H5.

As for the GPU, MSI sells cards with silent out of the box cooling, for 1440p go with a 1070!
