One or two NVMe M.2 SSDs

Hello, in the past, some people mentioned that it is better to use two SSDs (a smaller one to install OS as well as applications and a bigger one for storing/accessing big data). If I use NVme M.2 SSD, will I have performance gain in using two SSDs the way mentioned rather than putting everything in one big SSD?

Solution

Performance is probably no different vs a single larger drive.

It is helpful, though, to have your OS and applications on one drive, and all your data on a different drive.
If the OS ever needs reinstall...your data is not affected.

A performance gain in what? The SSD without the OS might perform slightly better when it comes to sequential transfers to another fast drive or something like that. But in terms of game or app launch times and load times I doubt there would be any noticeable difference between the SSD the the OS and the one without. In fact their is barely any noticeable difference between a good sata ssd and an nvme m.2 drive, in terms of load times, launch times, and boot times.

From an ease of use point of view, a single larger ssd is better.
There will be no need to actively manage space.
A small ssd for windows can fill up quickly and lose both performance and endurance.
I would not go that way.
A single larger ssd will have more nand blocks which will increase endurance and make updates marginally faster.
Lastly, a single large ssd will usually cost less than two half sized drives.

Thanks for the reminder. The need to reinstall the OS is a very good point. So, if I have a conventional 2-3T HD to backup the data, then 1 NVme M.2 SSD is good enough. However, if I just use NVme M.2 SSD, then it is better to use two as you pointed out. Is that right?

I am talking about using Linux as the OS.

Depends on what size drives you're considering.
I would prefer 2 x 500GB drives vs a single 1TB drive.

But either way would work.
