Hello, with the new GTX1170 cards coming in July, i was wondering if i should buy in july or the previous gen 1070 now, while its still in stock at my near Best Buy? Reason im asking is i have a $400 budget on my graphics card and the one at bestbuy isnt far off from MSPR at $430, but the rumored new cards are set to have their MSRP be much higher to compensate for the crypto currency problem, is there any advice i can get on this, whether to purchase an older card now for cheap, or buy a refresh that might not be as impressive later on at a potentially higher price? Thank you

I should also mention this card won't be gaming much, i mainly do 3D visuals for clients, and excuse my very little knowledge on what is going on with cryptocurrency and hardware atm, im not fully up to speed.

Yes. JUMP ON IT. You could turn around and sell it for a profit based on eBay pricing. I just checked and it's the Founder's Edition. WOW. Worst Buy turns into a BEST Buy afterall!

Edit: excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor............ if the miners see this they'll flock to it. Even more, if the insane mining craze continues, you could sell it for what you paid for it (if not more) and upgrade...
First, based on history of Nvidia's new releases, it will be the GTX 1180 (or 2080 however Nvidia will name it and nobody knows yet). Nvidia always starts out at the high end on release as they've done ever since the GTX 2xx series starting with the GTX 285. This is even if it is released in July which I have strong doubts about (my guess is August-September). Then you'll have to wait for another month or two for the GTX 1170. Again this is all based on history of previous release patterns by Nvidia.

Second, if you buy a GTX 1070 right now you are going to be over-paying. You would regret not waiting because based on paper information, Volta is expected to best it's Pascal predecessor by 25% or more in performance while consuming less power.

Third and finally, is this a GPU upgrade from what you have now or is it a new card for your business? If it is business related, and what you have now is impeding your operations, then you need to get what you need as an up front business cost. Oh and speaking of basing history, these new GPUs will be in strong demand and out of stock constantly.

If there is a 1070 for $430, it is not really overpriced by much more than $30-$50. As for new GPU pricing, it is really anyone's guess. nVidia would be foolish price it at crypto miner prices, because hopefully by then crpyto would have cratered big time.

From your words to God's ears. I have a deep rooted hatred for miners ruining gaming PC building/upgrading enjoyment. When you can buy a console, two games, and a year's online subscription for less money than even a mid-range GPU goes for, it's bad. I hope they all crash and burn.

BTW: if Best Buy has that GPU for $430 it has to be either a refurb or store return. Otherwise it is a STEAL. No other retailer like NewEgg, Amazon, or B&H Photo are even close to that price. See exhibits A and B:

Nvidia will most likely set the MSRP at a reasonable price.
MSRP means nothing though. Retailers will sell it for whatever they can get.

Yep. It's why we've seen a nearly 50% spike in GPU prices in six months. Classic supply and demand price structure. Unfortunately we are currently in a perfect storm of that between miner demand and memory chip manufacturing demand competition from Apple and Samsung for smart phones.

The only good thing I can say about the mining craze is that it makes older GPUs rise in value as they snap those up too. Last year I sold my GTX 970s in a pair for $450 and bought a GTX 1080 Ti with the spoils. In months prior, used GTX 970s were going for $175 on eBay. Had I waited, I might have gotten more for them but I'd be paying a LOT more for that 1080 Ti that cost me $730 at the time.

Here's my GPU by the way for a cool $1,000: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1330063-REG/evga_11g_p4_6593_kr_geforce_gtx_1080_ti.html

Hello, and thank you for the detailed response! I spoke with someone on the phone at Best Buy and they confirmed its sealed, and still brand new at the 429.99 price, should i go for it? Currently my 750ti lasted me a great 3 years but its defiantly is starting to show its age in places like After Effects and Cinema 4D, especially since it's not a powerful one in the first place. All i was mainly worried about was seeing the new 1100 series be much stronger for the same price, but again with cryptomining in place i'm not sure if what i've found now is a great deal or if nvidia will be nice enough to sell founders edition cards on their site again at MSRP. I'm not in dire need of this GPU right this moment but i would definatly like it to be soon, as it's defiantly slowing down my workflow a lot, but again going off what you have said where they release cards in order of power, i'm not sure i can hold that long if its expected to be maybe in September.

Again thank you
