Hi,

I was thinking about upgrading my system and was wondering whether or not I should also replace my PSU.

I'm on a budget so I was considering re-using my current one which is 5 years old.

Here are my current specs:

PSU: Antec HCG 620W
Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FX rev.4
CPU: FX 8350
GPU: Asus R9 290
HDD: Seagate 1 TB
RAM: 8 Gigs

I've heard a lot about power supplies damaging other components when they die, a lot of mixed opinions mostly, so I was looking for some suggestions. Is it safe to re-use the same PSU or would that be too risky?

Thanks

Personally, I would have no problem using that PSU for many more years, if it was treated well and used under safe conditions. It will depend on the length of time it has been powered up and the length of time it ran at or above its efficiency rating of 80%. But my ancient XFX 850W Black Edition has survived several complete PC builds. Two of them with SLI/xFire cards.

The PSU has been running pretty much daily, except at night or anytime I shutdown my computer when i'm not using it.

The new system will be intel, will need less power.

Haven't had any issues with it yet.
