Is it possible or too difficult to upgrade a Dell Inspiron AMD Ryzen AM4 Socket CPU with one of the new 2nd Gen Ryzens they are releasing? It's been a while since I messed with motherboards and I don't know if desktops now solder the CPUs into place somehow or something similar.

Solution
All Ryzen boards will be able to run all AM4 chips made up to 2020. You won't be able to overclock them as high or use new included features but you will have the option to upgrade. AMD made it clear they would not pull a sub socket bait and switch like Intel has with 1151. With OEM products though you are limited to how often they decide to update the BIOS, Dell and HP both have a nasty habit of deliberately not keeping things updated in order to get you into replacing your entire PC more often than you should.

This does not mean Dell will push out or offer a BIOS update for the board allowing the new CPUs to be recognized....

(No incentive for them to offer easy upgrades, they'd prefer you to buy a new rig)

So I'd be a little leery when saying 'all Ryzen boards' if it includes large OEM products....(no BIOS update, no options)

I'm pretty sure I just said all that. :heink: "With OEM products though you are limited to how often they decide to update the BIOS"

I haven't made the purchase yet. But from what I've been reading even if I can update the bios and the cpu there still maybe other features of the mobo I wouldn't be able to utilize. So, I'd rather wait and see if they come out with the 2nd Gen Desktop instead. Ow, I hate waiting! :)
