Upgrade? Overclock? Rebuild?

Before I describe my problem, here's my specs:

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 CPU @ 3.60GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270 2GB
RAM: 4GB
MOBO: Asus - H81M-D PLUS Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
OS: Windows 10 64 (pro I think?)

This computer has worked well for me for the past 3-4 years or so, I mainly play fighting games and indies. I recently started playing warframe, and performance mainly only suffers when I'm in the big open world mmo area. Now I'm beta testing dauntless and it feels very very choppy and unplayable in the main town hub. Most games recommend i5 processors, but I can skate by with medium graphic settings on my processor.

So, should I overclock it? (something I know very little about) Is it the RAM holding me back? Or do I need to go full rebuild and ditch my cpu? If you have any suggestions at all before the full rebuild step, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

RAM needs to be 8gb atleast for todays AAA games. Some of them needs even more. You need to remember that, out of that meager 4gb, the system reserves some amount to run itself. It also reserves some additional amount for background tasks.
4160 is locked chip and cannot be overclocked. So that is out of the question. Two cores are not enough for CPU intensive games or section of games and that is why there is performance deterioration in those sections you have mentioned.

TLDR, search for a i5/i7(recommended) from Haswell gen., preferably 4770/4790/k and add another 4gb RAM. You might need a better card as well depending on the variant of the R9 you are rocking.

The CPU is locked so you can't overclock that but overclocking the R9 270 may give you a few more FPS. Upgrading RAM may help a little bit.

Is it possible that Dauntless just hasn't been optimized yet as it's still in testing?

If you give us a complete list of your parts and a budget we may be able to recommend parts for you.

Maybe try a program like MSI after burner. It will have charts for cpu and gpu usage. And also used to overclock. Likely your gpu and cpu are running close to max anyway. You're just hitting the min requirements all around. I'm no expert. But it might give you a better idea.
