Laptop Shuts Down after CPU too much thermal paste after 5-10sec

So I had this new GPU delivered and installed since my old one died and I tell to myself: why don't I refresh thermal paste on CPU now that I have it open. So I did. And overdid I might add. And laptop would turn off after 5sec. So I clean CPU EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE and now it lasts around 15sec if I am lucky. What am I missing?

Solution
Which laptop model?
It appears to be overheating and it's shutting down to protect your components.
Make sure to have the right amount of thermal paste and check that the heatsink is properly seated and the fan connected.

Should I remove even more of it and try again then? My model is Clevo W860CU.

Do you know which one is overheating, CPU or GPU?
Use the HWMonitor app to check temps.

If any is overheating then, I suggest you remove the heatsink (fan might need to be removed first) and clean both the CPU and heatsink thoroughly with 91% - 99% isopropyl alcohol.
Apply a paper-thin layer of thermal paste over the CPU or a dot in the center.
Place and press the heatsink straight down onto the CPU with one hand and insert each screw just a hinch
in a diagonal pattern, tightening them one by one, little by little.

So....ends up it was GPU (oops... Wrong section) that was overheating. Unfortunately, 1 screw has its head destroyed and I can't put it back. So it has 3/4 screws. I searched over 5000 similar screws but no luck (I am being literate, I checked myself on screw storages of local shops from 100s of disassembled parts).

I might have found an alternate, kinda crafty solution thought. But it will take (even more) effort on my part. So I need to know first. Is that 1 screw so important that makes GPU overheat in 10-15? Or it can be that plus something else lurking to appear when I fix the screw?

Also, what if I fill the gap with thermal paste? It has a plastic surface around it anyway. It's not like it will hurt surrounding stuff like it would in CPU.

You could find the screw on eBay in less than 10 seconds.

Yes, that screw is very important to help the heat transfer to the heatsink. Unless you want the system to shutdown every time it overheats, which eventually will damage the chip or motherboard or both.

Replacing a screw is not the purpose of thermal paste. Thermal paste is just supposed to fill the microscopy gaps between the chip and heatsink.

So yeah.. indeed heatsink was the problem. The screw was VERY special. No ebay and stuff online. Only if I replaced the whole heatsink from the specific model (120$ without delivery+taxes... f**k me...) I found a close screw and a surface in which screw went through and pressured heatsink. Along with four times the suggested thermal paste (AG thermal paste, extreme version(very expensive)) I dare to say that it has -5 degrees than before. So hopefully it will last. Thanks for the direction guys. You saved me a lot of time.

Glad to see that you got the working.
I just search one eBay and found the whole set of screws for your laptop -> here
Good to know they're available in case you need them some day
