Hello!

I have an ASUS-X99 Deluxe II motherboard in my computer that has a total of ten SATA 3 Ports in it. But, I am purchasing a 5.25" to 3.5" hot swap bay to put in the front bay of my computer, because I am constantly switching HDDs in and out of my computer (I test/wipe them for friends & clients & such). I have all of the SATA ports on my motherboard occupied right now, save for two, but the hot swap bay uses 4 ports. So, I was wondering if I can use something like this [See link below] to allow me to connect a few more drives to my computer, using only SATA II instead. I know that SATA II is slightly slower, but I am not concerned with that. My concern is that the PC will not have the capability to recognize so many drives (totaling 14, plus an m.2 drive, if all normal and expansion slots have been filled). I use Windows 10 Pro. I assume it won't be a problem, but I just want to make sure first, of course. As well, I am not concerned about power supply requirements - I am fine there. And I have an i7 6800K, but the SATA ports do not use PCIe or the associated lanes, so that shouldn't have any effect on it, if I am correct. Please advise!

For reference, I am using this drive bay: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132037&cm_re=5.25_to_3.5_rosewill_hot-_-16-132-037-_-Product

Thanks In Advance!

Either of those cards fits into a 1x PCIe slot, so it should only tie up one PCIe lane even if it's put into a 16x slot. Since PCIe lanes are much faster than SATA lanes it can support several SATA lanes going to just one PCIe.

Awesome! My only concern is lane bandwidth. My CPU is 28 lanes, I am using 20 right now. (x4 for m.2 and x16 for GTX 1070). How many would that card theoretically use if it had all 8 drives connected?

Even better - was looking for something cheaper! Thanks for the help!

Is there some reason you've selected a SATA port multiplier card (which takes one SATA port and multiplies it so it can be shared over multiple SATA drives)? For a SATA port multiplier to work, the source port (the one from the motherboard you're multiplying) has to support port multiplication. This is a somewhat rare feature, usually found on eSATA ports, not internal SATA ports. I can't find any references in a quick google search to your motherboard's SATA ports supporting this feature.

A straight SATA controller card (which gives you new, independent SATA ports accessed over the PCIe bus) is cheaper and avoids this issue.

No particular reason - just chose it because I needed something to have that function or similar. That's why I checked here first! Thanks!
