Low FPS, Same hardware and settings

Hello community,

I've recently bought Far Cry 5 and started playing with a friend. I realized this before while playing Fallout 4, but that game is created on an engine which just simply cannot be trusted, so I simply based some slight fps drops on the inferior engine. This is starting to get annoying though, and I would finally like to figure out what is going on. We started playing FC5 co-op, and I keep getting around 10-20 fps less than my friend. We pretty much both got exactly the same PCs (except the case and cooling) and settings both in-game and in the NVIDIA panel. I've heard this might be because of the CPU overheating or the speed might be fluctuating. To check this specifically I downloaded CPUID and ran the game. That seems to be just fine. I checked all the memory usage, kept an eye out on the temperature, nothing seems out of the ordinary.

We both run on Windows 10 64, MSI 980Ti, i7 4970k 4.0GHz, 16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3, Z97 Gaming 5 Mobo and 750W Gold PSU. While he has better cooling, I still get an average of 60c on my GPU, 50c CPU and 55c Mobo while playing FC5. The usage does not usually go above 80% GPU, 70% CPU and I can't exactly remember RAM at the moment but it is low, had more during Fallout 4 gameplay. We also did not overclock anything.

I cannot figure out why this is happening, I lowered the settings to High from Ultra, and while it was running well for sometime, and it still runs OK sometimes, it mostly drops below 60 fps, unless I am in the middle of a field where I get 70-80 fps, and is just straight up annoying. Same place, same time, my friend gets 70-90 and 80-120.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Yeah check gpu drivers as there has been an update following FC5's release.

Has Game Bar been turned off?

Overlay from either Steam and Uplay turned off?

Not sure if field of view affects performance but compare this setting with your friend, they could have fov set in closer.

Yea, i updated them right after FC5 downloaded. Maybe the new drivers are just crap? My friend did not update btw. I also have both overlays on but so does he. We both have exactly the same settings, I even use lower res 1680x1050 because I don't have a full HD screen and he does. Also, Game Bar?

Well a lower res will work the cpu more so your friend would be benefiting more gpu action running a higher resolution yes.

Search how to disable game bar. It's fullscreen optimisation and xbox recording in the background can hurt performance.

I just turned Game Bar off and had a quick test in some of the bad areas I've spotted so far, still the same results. I dunno if I have to restart my PC after turning it off but I don't have time at the moment, I will get back to this post tomorrow after I'm back home and see what's happening. Thanks so far guys, keep throwing suggestions my way! :)

Could try resolution scaling in advanced settings in FC5, turn it up and turn off Antialiasing. The idea is to get the gpu working harder so contrary to what the game's description says reduce scaling to improve performance in your case increasing it could improve, we'll see. This is the game's own scaling but Nvidia has it's own as well i'll get to.

As you increase resolution scale the need for antialiasing is less so mess around with the settings using smaa or turn it off completely.

Nvidia's DSR factors in 3D management check a few options like 1.20/1.50 and 1.78x, this will allow the game to render in higher resolutions and then down scales to match your monitor's native resolution. You'll be able to select higher resolutions in-game so once you chose a resolution higher then native DSR is on, so you can leave it enabled globally in Nvidia.

I'd say try each method separately and not both game and Nvidia scaling at the same time, that might be bad ;P

Remember to mess around with antialiasing settings or turn it off if you up scale the render.

Alright, so. I got back a couple hours ago and started testing. I begun with the in-game options. I tried increasing the scale from 1.2 to even 1.5 with SMAA and AA off, but I saw even more performance decrease. Then I reset that and went on into the NVIDIA panel, where I firstly tried out the 1.78 scale with 33% smoothness. The next best resolution available was 2054 by something funny, it was more than full HD in any case. Then I decided to for 1.50, and I ended up with the same resolution again. I also tried decreasing smoothness to 12% then, and it also didn't change the performance. After that I chose 1.20 which enabled the best resolution option in my opinion, which was 1840 by something else, not full HD but still better than my current native res. I tested that with both 33% smoothness and 10%, and this also did not change a thing unfortunately. I also tried SMAA and AA off with a couple of these and that did nothing new. :(

I'm having thoughts that it might be something wrong with the actual build, as in I built it and I might have fekd something up, or something is damaged. Maybe the PSU is also a factor in this?

ah heck. I doubt it's anything to do with hardware, if it was hardware you'd be having whole set of different instability problems as in bsods and reboots. It'll most likely be software or settings.

Hows your memory configured to make 16GB? Is it multiple sticks for dual channel or 1x 16GB single channel.

Can you test a 1080p monitor or even a 1080p Tv?

Get your friend to write down all in game settings as well as NvidiaCP if he changes anything in there. Also Windows power plans. Everything max power full performance.

Try Adaptive and Fast sync

Try with Farcry5 exe in the compatibility tab uncheck or check to turn off fullscreen optimisation.

So I have 2x8GB HyperX Black, I do not own a full HD monitor or TV at the moment. What I did before all this was compared all the settings both in-game and Nvidia Panel. I haven't had a look at the power plans yet, I will see about that now. I did try all the sync options though, while fast decreased screen tearing massively, it also made the game stutter slightly from time to time. Adaptive didn't really do a whole lot. What I do right now is turn off all vsync and fps lock, and increase the refresh rate from 61 to 75. This seems to fix both the stuttering and screen tearing even though my monitor is 61. I do indeed have a very crappy monitor unfortunately. It was my plan to get a full HD proper monitor next, but I haven't had any upgrades to my PC since I built it 3 years ago.

So I changed to High performance and I also turned off fullscreen optimization for FC5, while I can see a slight difference, as in a couple or one more fps in populated areas, I still don't see any other increases. Man this is a duck hunt and a half if I ever seen one.
