What on Earth are wrong with the GPU prices?

I typically upgrade my card every three years and today I go to search for information about the 1180 and whatever will come after Vega. I discovered that the prices for cards are about twice what they normally are. For instance, I bought my current card, 980ti, for $600 when it launched. It now sells used for $700.

I looked into it for a few minutes and people are saying it's due to bitcoin miners. Is this true and is there any hope that prices will return to normal anytime soon?

Supply and demand. Demand for the graphics cards far exceeded the supply (a lot of which is due to cryptocurrency mining), and prices went through the roof. Prices have gotten a little better, but I wouldn't say they are in any way good.

As far as a market recovery is concerned, all we can do is speculate on that. I have my suspicions that NVIDIA will do what it can to keep prices high, even if a recovery occurs, but that's just my opinion.

Time will tell.
