Swapped PSU to test stability and it doesn't post.

My PC is a custom build, over 4 years old. Last October the pc locked up for the first time since I put it together. I didn't change anything for about a year leading up to the sudden freeze. The freezing became a regular occurrence (typically once or twice a week at most) and I began troubleshooting in December. I have slowly been narrowing down what it could be.

My system specs:
AMD FX-8350
Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0
Corsair HX850 80 plus gold
Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
GeForce GTX 1060 Founder's Edition

At some point in January while I was in the BIOS settings, the system locked up. This told me it wasn't a software issue (is this a safe assumption?) My troubleshooting adventure continued for months. I have experienced the system lock up without the following:
-RAM
-GPU
-Sound card
-Hard drive

A little side note: I noticed when I overclock the system by 10% the system lockups seem to be slightly more frequent (the system still manages to pass 6+ hours of prime95.) I'm talking maybe an average of 3 times a week instead of 1-2. There are still weeks where it doesn't lock up.

The final piece of hardware I wanted to test was the PSU. I borrowed a 650w Thermaltake PSU to test with. I have run into a new issue though: the system won't post. When the 8-pin CPU power cable is connected, the motherboard shuts off immediately. I unplug the CPU power and it powers on fine (obviously doesn't post without CPU.)

Any suggestions? What circumstances would cause my system to reject this PSU? I noticed this PSU is bronze rated while my PSU is gold rated. Also I am using the 8-pin CPU power cable that came with my Corsair PSU. This is fine right?

No, no, no, a thousand times no! Modular cables from PSUs are *not* standardized on the end that goes into the power supply, manufacturers have different pinouts. That it's simply not working is *good* news. Doing this can end up frying the CPU, the motherboard, and more.
