Why upgrade RAM ?

I 'm not computer savvy and am trying to understand ram, I know its called random access memory and the basics about it, I need a pen tablet that is very expensive and can only afford the 8gb ram, I should really be getting the 16gb one but just can't afford it, I need to know if if I do buy the 8gb one and things start slowing down after a few months, if I did a full windows 10 factory restart would that send the ram back to 8gb ? it seems too easy a remedy to me when the price of a 16gb tablet is significantly more than for 8.

And the amount of RAM you might need in a particular system is dictated by what you're running, and how many things at the same time.

For instance, my main PC has 32GB RAM. I often run a few VirtualMachines at the same time. Often going over 20-25GB consumed RAM.
My little Asus Transformer only has 2GB RAM, because it is basically just a web browser machine. Very light use.

RAM is a physical device. It does not go up and down over time. It is and remains "8GB".

A laptop/tablet/PC may become slower over time due to software. Too much junk installed and running in the background.
A clean OS install obviously wipes all that out and starts fresh.

many thanks for that, I am beginning to understand, I have been told that when using the tablet it takes up a lot of memory for some types of work like spray painting effect etc, is that a different type of memory ?

Applications use RAM. Not the 'tablet'.
Some applications want or need more RAM than others.
Photoshop vs MS Paint, for instance.

But unless it is a badly written application, when you close it...it releases the RAM it was using.

although the tablet I am buying is a computer as well I will only mainly be using it as a graphic tablet only because I have a MacBook Pro that I use as may main computer, some people have said that 8gb is not enough for the artwork I will be doing, its a large tablet as well 28 inch screen, would size affect ?

Screen size in inches doesn't matter...resolution does.
I'm not well versed in the Mac world, but whatever applications you are using would have a recommended RAM amount.

Generally, more RAM is better than 'not quite enough'.

I know that if this were a Windows based system, and large graphics applications, I'd be wanting 16GB RAM or more.

it is a windows tablet, its a Microsoft studio tablet, I have no choice and have to go for 8gb because the 16 price is far too much for me, I think it may well be ok for me as I am only doing slight very fine detail alterations of some old paintings of mine, it will have to be anyway, at least if things start slowing up its possible to upgrade the ssd, many thanks for all your help, some of the light is coming through now thanks to you.
