Hi, my desktop was built by a shop about 6 years ago. I've read up on the reviews on the parts of my desktop and i think they might be able to support a newer GPU. I am looking to upgrade to GTX 1060. I just want to be able to play games on higher quality graphics and other future games as well. Any advices are welcomed!

Here is my build:
Intel i7-3770 3.4GHz
ASUS P8Z77V-LK
8 GB RAM
Seagate 1TB HDD
Nvidia GTX 760 (upgraded from GTX560TI about 3 years ago?)
Seventeam ST-850ZAF

Yep, the GTX1060 should drop in very nicely.

Old as it now is the base system is still plenty good enough for decent gaming-you made a wise choice in going for the i7 at build time, mate-but I'd treat this as the final large upgrade before you replace the core system ( CPU/MB/RAM ) in a couple of years time.

It might be a good move to replace the power supply as well, Seventeam weren't a top tier maker to begin with and after 6 years of service its output will have dropped significantly ( Google ' capacitor aging' if you're curious as to why ) no need to go overboard, this is a top notch part:
