i5 4690k or r9 280x upgrade?

So I'm having a dilemma on which to upgrade to improve my FPS in gaming. Maybe some of you can shed some light for me.

Currently running triple 24 inch monitors in 5760 x 1080 rez
i5 4690k
8 gigs of ram
Gigabyte z97x-sli
R9 280x
I Also have two of the 280x cards but my son is using the other.

My choices are upgrading to a GTX 1060 graphics card or upgrading my
CPU, motherboard and ram to an i5 8400 and 16 gigs.

Mainly play R6 Siege and occasionally fortnite.

With my setup now I get steady 60fps
With medium settings but I'd like to achieve high or ultra high.

I was faced with that question about 10 months ago.

is what I have now. My next upgrade MIGHT be my monitor.

The 4690 is fine for a couple more years.

Did you notice a huge improvement in gaming?
I could spend the extra $$ and get a 1070 or 1080 but not sure if the jump in price from a 1060 (more than double)is worth it.

Me? Huge improvement? LOL!!!!! Yes, my fps tripled in some games. A couple others showed a problem with the game. A change to the game's ini file fixed one game. I forget some other fixes I had to apply.

With a 1080p screen the 1080 Ti i too much. I'll be upgrading my monitor, when my arm and leg and half a liver grow back. I had to sell that to afford the card. Nothing less that 1440p. That higher resolution will lighten the load on the CPU. Use Nvidia' DSR if necessary.

From a 280x the 1060 will certainly be a big upgrade but the 4690K is capable of supporting even the 1080 Ti at 4K. You might look at the 1070 or maybe the 1070 Ti as a compromise.

You lost me at 1440p and Nvidia DSR but had me at sell your liver. Haha you're pretty much right.
I'll be giving some more thought on pulling the trigger on a 1070 now. Thanks for your answer, much appreciated.

Right click Desktop. Click Nvidia Control Panel. Manage 3D settings. Click on DSR Factor in the pane on the right. Enable all the optional resolutions. You can now emulate resolutions higher than the native one. http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3587/~/how-to-enable-dynamic-super-resolution-in-games. ha more info about Nvidia's DSR.
