CPU temp problems

Hello,

I've been having some problems with my computer's performance and at first I thought it was due to my processor bottlenecking my GPU. I have a 980ti and an i5-4590. I think I did find the problem but it wasn't a bottleneck. Rather, my CPU temps are abnormally high. I always monitor GPU temps but never thought to check out CPU until now.

At the moment, I'm using MSI Afterburner and CPUID HWMonitor to monitor the temps and they're both sitting at 50 Celcius. When I boot up Far Cry 5, the temps spike to 100. When viewing task manager while playing, CPU usage hovers around 70% with speed around 2.5-3 GHz.

So now that I know what the problem is, I'm looking for solutions. I'm using the stock cooler which seems to be working fine and the air isn't too hot when i feel the air around the CPU. I don't remember putting on thermal paste because I think the stock fan already had some pre-applied. I'm also using 3 stock case fans, all 120mm. Pulling air from bottom and back, pushing air from the top of the case. The case is also a mATX Bitfenix.

I have a few options since I'm not too sure exactly whats leading to the high temps. Originally, I was just going to upgrade to an i7-4790k. But now I'm thinking about trying to fix the temp problems. I've cleaned out the dust in my computer, and now I'm considering buying 140mm fans to replace my current fans and improve airflow and buying more thermal paste to see if that helps with anything. I'm also considering getting an aftermarket fan cooler to replace the stock cooler. Thoughts?

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Solution

Get a better CPU cooler.
If you have heat exhaust to the back by the GPU, then the fan on the back could be pulling hot air from the back into the case.
It is not safe, and you shorten the life span of your CPU, when temps are higher than 85°C for long periods.
