Hello, so I managed to score a old computer with a i7-2600 and 8gb of RAM inside and wanted to use it for a server rig. Inside I'd have 250gb ssd for boot and a 4tb hdd for the nas. The problem is that I'd like to have windows 10 running as the main OS. I would want other windows applications running along side the server. I know I can make a network attached drive but I want to implement permissions. Is there any application or software that would allow me to set up the HDD as a nas while running Windows 10 as a host?

Solution
I ran FreeNAS thru VB on Win7 Home, and, thru Hyper-V/Win10-Pro...

You only need Pro to run administer HyperV/add the Hyper-V role, but, could easily install VB to Win10-Home as well...

As you desire to run 'both', either would be reasonable alternatives, with VirtualBox likely the simplest to implement.
Why not just run Windows, and simply share the drive thru the network to whomever you wish?

Alternatively, you could run Win10 Pro, and, FreeNAS, and/or any Linux server distro from within HyperV alongside Win10....; if WIn10 Pro is too expensive, you can attempt the same thru VIrtualBox....

So you're saying it's possible to run FreeNAS through virtual box on a Windows 10 Pro host?
