Supermicro X7DCA-L Cooling Suggestions?

Quick background. I had planned to install a network (with servers) in my home for quite some time. To get easy access to some server hardware I decided to do a rent to own option from a company that runs a cloud server location. I enjoyed using the server but the day came when I actually owned the hardware. I did all my home network wiring and had the server sent to me.

At the time I rented the server I knew about "blade" servers but I didn't understand how the 1U format worked. Needless to say it was a surprise when I plugged in the server and suddenly went deaf by the fan noise.

Thankfully I have an out, at least I hope I do. The server motherboard is an ATX format, which means I can simply toss it in one of the many ATX cases I have lying around. I have a power supply and pretty much everything else I need. The only drawback right now... Cooling.

In the 1U chassis the dual CPU's have passive heatsinks on them which measure roughly 3 by 3.5 inches, and at that size they only have about 1/4 inch between them.

I need to find a cooling option that would satisfy those tight constraints, keep the system cool, and not break the bank.

Well the CM Hyper T2 is Socket LGA 775 compatible and also have good ram clearance. You suggest setting up the fans so that they blow upwards and the lower towards the upper one. The two cpu sockets are close to each other so, you seems to have no other choice, but it will be ok. Go for it!

Thanks for the suggestion. I did some searching on the Dynatron website as well, thanks for that link. Didn't see anything of interest. Oddly enough, when I followed your amazon link I actually saw a "customers also viewed" link which gave me another idea. I ended up over on Newegg and found this guy;

It uses a 92mm fan (roughly 3.6in) which at first glance I figured would be too wide. Then I realized that these things mount vertical. In that position, fan included, they're reportedly only 80mm (roughly 3.1in). That SHOULD fit nicely.

Now I'm wondering about the fan setup. I could give myself more clearance by having the fans on the outside of the heatsyncs, blowing toward each other (through the heatsyncs). That would generate a sorta hot-zone between the heatsyncs in about a 1-inch open space, which would freely dissipate upwards. On the other hand I could simply install them as-is and accept that the heat from CPU1 will be traveling through the heatsync of CPU2, which would give CPU2 a slightly higher running temp.
