Just a quick question. I was wondering if a LGA2066 Socket is backwards compatible to fit my i7-3770 on it.
I have purchased a msi x299 Tomahawk AC motherboard and will soon be purchasing the RAM for it and was just wanting to know if I have to wait until I get the CPU to assemble and test it or if I can go ahead and take my i7 to get things set up

Too add to above no's the 3rd gen processor will be smaller than the socket and will never work with the board. You might bend pins with the chip sitting on top of them and that's not covered by the warranty. You need a Skylake-X processor like the i7 7800X.

Note these kinds of LGA2066 processors don't come with stock coolers. In this setup I did 16GB but if you need an LGA2066 processor for workstation tasks I've seen people opt for 32GB or even 64GB.

Really? You'd cool a 4th generation X CPU with $30 worth of cooling?

But yes I agree that the size alone - at most you would bend the pins on the motherboard even if it would fit, and if it did, incompatible voltages would light it sky high.

Yes the EVO 212 isn't the ideal LGA2066 cooler at all... It probably would overheat come to think of it! I just picked it to give a build framework. Indeed you'd definitely want something bigger and more expensive.
