hello everyone,

iam planning to make use of a 1366 motherboard (gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R) and planning to install 48gb of ram (8gb x 6) and 8gb Asus x580 graphics card + HD7970 + HD7950. now my major question is which CPU is better ? is it the Xeon W3690 or the i7 990x, iam planning to overclock up to 4.50GHz stable, i read some guys overclocked the i7 990x up to 5GHz and more !!. *** i will be using a massive 3 fan radiator for water cooling and also liquid metal and i will delid the CPU too ***

my main work is workstation work, like app development with music development opened at the same time, also alot of 3D modelling and alot of simulation and virtual machines (including massive amounts of programming and hundreds of opened chrome tabs) . iam not intending to do any gaming on it as i game on PS4 and Xbox one.

Please consider reading this topic carefully and elaborate as much as you can in your answers.

Many thanks

I don't think it is necessary to de-lid older Intel CPUs, they have soldered heat spreaders. They started using paste on consumer chips starting with Ivy Bridge, and didn't stop on HEDT until Broadwell-E if memory serves.

Have you considered a more modern platform? Those chips were released in 2009 I think.

Even an i7-4930k or something would still let you use DDR3 if you happen to have piles of it laying around.

With Gulftown, 4Ghz was pretty easy to achieve. 4.5Ghz was pretty rare. Usually required having the best of memory. It is BCLK overclocking, so the memory will go with it. You can try using smaller multipliers on the memory until it works though.

Think like 23x220Mhz 5.06Ghz and 6x220Mhz for DDR3 1320Mhz

Whereas you would get more per core performance out of a stock 4th Gen HEDT CPU.

Or even a recent platform like X99 or X299. That would be DDR4, but there were quite a lot of gains in core count per dollar.

so please try to answer my questions without suggesting anything out of the question :)

thank you
