I am currently looking to upgrade my CPU. I mostly want to use it for gaming, however i tend to play more CPU oriented games such as GTA V.
I currently have an AMD fx-4100 and a PNY Nvidia GeForce GTX 760.
I have been looking at the AMD fx-9590 as my upgrade. Is this a good choice or is there something better out there that would better suit my needs?

My motherboard has an AM3+ socket.

Solution

Fx is generally a bad CPU to use, I would recommend changing your motherboard to AM4 and getting a Ryzen chip that will most definitely out perform the FX 9590. If you don't wan't to switch motherboards and upgrade to DDR4 then the 9590 should be a decent upgrade.

As for a Ryzen CPU, it really depends on your budget and needs. For what you stated your doing the Ryzen 5 1600x or Ryzen 5 2600x should be plenty, keep in mind your going to need DDR4 memory and a new motherboard. The difference between the 2nd gen Ryzen CPU's and the first gen chips are fairly straight forward, lower latency cache, less power draw, less heat, higher base and turbo clocks, and the potential to run at DDR4 3400mhz Ram. With that said, the 2600x competes directly with the more expensive I5 8600k, with the 2600x you'll see slightly lower FPS (between 1-5 FPS lower or more depending on the game) but in multitasking and CPU intensive loads the 2600x smashes the 8600k, helpful if you want to start streaming games or other multitasking loads.

The 2600x is looking like the best option, a bit pricey, but you can drop the price by slimming down to 8gb's ram instead of 16 (not recommended for a Gaming PC) And you won't be able to overclock on that B350 motherboard. I recommend the 2600x over the 1600x even though the option is yours, but consider upgrading your GPU next, the 2600x should be capable of handling up to a GTX 1070 ti or 1080 without too much of a hit to FPS compared to the Ryzen 7 2700x or better. If you let me know what your budget for a CPU motherboard and ram, as well as color scheme of your current setup I can get you better options to pick from.
