i have the i7-6700k and i really need to overclock and doing it via xtu or stuff like that is cousing problems for me,
i can change the Ghz in the bios but cannot change the volteg..
so i know i cannot put just a asus chip beacuse that will not work...
so if i will get a new motherboard say asus motherboard beacuse they give a lot of oc options will my bios change to asus bios?
allso i want to get the i7-8700K is it worth getting? beacuse i have the i7-6700k

The i7-8700K is compatible with the Asus Prime Z370-P motherboard (but not the i7-6700K).

You would need to specify the exact memory to confirm it's compatibility.

The following DDR4 memory is compatible with the ASUS Intel PRIME Z370-P Socket LGA 1151 DDR4 ATX Motherboard.

4 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR4 4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3400(O.C.)/3333(O.C.)/3300(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666/2400/2133 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory *
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)

Another possibility is to move your system to another case. That would allow you a much better selection of motherboards. Something like this Corsair mid tower case would fit any regular ATX size motherboard. That would be permit a Z270 motherboard plus the cooling for overclocking your processor.

No, the I7-8700K requires a different series of motherboard. It takes a LGA1151 300 series motherboard like the Z370. None of the new 300 series (even though they are also LGA 1151) are compatible with previous years processors.

Those require a 100 or 200 series LGA 1151 motherboard like the Z270 motherboard that I linked above. So you would need to change motherboards again to upgrade to the I7-8700K from the I7-6700K.

Here is a list of Asus motherboards compatible with the I7 8700K processor. All have PCI Express 3.0 x 16 slots and are compatible with your GTX 980Ti graphics card.
