different sized ram sticks

so im running otu of ram and want to upgrade, i have a single cl17 2400 sodimm 16gb right now and due to cost... im looking to ebay some ram. if i were to get an 8gb to take me to 24gb of ram i would still be running dual channel then right? would i see a performance decrease from a second 16gb stick?

The safest option is ram packaged as a kit.
There's no guarantees when it comes to mixing ram. It's a gamble. It may work, or it may not. And when it doesn't, it'll cost you even more than if you'd just gotten the new kit to begin with.
-you could have the 16gb+8gb, same speeds... but if timings are different, the system will likely crash repeatedly
-(highest chance of working)they could have the same speeds and timings, and still be unstable

If you still wish to mix, run Memtest and see how it holds up... assuming the pc doesn't show signs from the get go.

i may go with an 8gb stick then, unless i can get a 16 for less than double the cost of hte 8. id like to have 32 but man the prices... i was reading an article where a guy who reports on a lot of tech news said the companies laughed at him when he mentioned that supply reports suggest ram prices will drop by end of this year... i guess mfg's intend to keep the prices high well into their supply increases.

i got a great deal on this laptop with a 1060 so thank god im set there... im looking at the same brand/voltage/timings on ebay atm, a 8 and 16gb stick but the 8gb seems to be 2/3-3/4 the price of a 16 so i think ill end up with a 16 given the small delta
