Guys I just ask this question because I’ve been sticking with windows 7 as long as I could because there was a problem tethering my iPad connection to the pc on windows 10 . A few days ago I got a virus on my windows 7 . I performed a complete reformat of the operating system and it seems to be doing weird things like doing windows update it got stuck on 1 of the installations I left overnight and only reboot fixed it . Then today I went to start then restart and it wouldn’t work straight away it took like 2 minutes to finally do it . I’ve had the windows colour and appearance box open and if I have another random folder open and pass it over the box it leaves traces of the box I am moving over the screen where window colour and appearance sits ... Speedtest in internet explorer has failed a few times .. as well as downloads failing . My bitdefender antivirus on one restart was greyed out and I had to restart my pc again . A few other things I feel the system isn’t optimal like before . Just stuff like this guys ?

I don’t assume it would be hardware orientated but I’m starting to wonder if just this windows 7 is on its last legs as an operating system and if I should just go to windows 10 ? Suggestions please ?

I would suggest you go with Windows 10 BUT make very sure you get it from a verified location, like Harvey Norman. If you look at amazon for prices for Windows 10 you might be wondering wtf the prices are all over but most of the sellers from there are not legit.
Since its going to be with you for as long as you own your system you might as well pay the full price and be sure.

It is a legitimate copy I bought from the store Harvey Norman here in Australia . Australia’s leading electrical store . It’s windows 7 ultimate. There were no corners cut ..

Thanks mate . Appreciate the response

*IF INSTALLING IS PROBLEMATIC you may have a hardware issue such as:

a) bad system memory (run MEMTEST86 for a full pass) www.memtest86.com , or
b) bad HDD/SSD drive, or
c) bad GRAPHICS CARD (since you describe odd color issues)

Maybe remove the video card and use the iGPU in the CPU (if you have one) by connecting display to motherboard, or swap to a different video card.

Best to sort that, and if it's fine I'd consider sticking with W7 and maybe do W10 on a new PC build if that's in the near future. W10 isn't super necessary though at some point only some games and applications (and security features) will work with it.

Exactly. I was thinking dying drive myself. Windows shouldn't behave like that at all. You should be able to install XP, 7, 8, etc and it should just work. Assuming there are drivers, etc for your device. It shouldn't "misbehave" just because it's not the top OS anymore.

These are great responses and certainly informative for me to think about . Which is what I do in these situations I sift through opinions to make the best possible outcome . Thanks guys . More solutions are welcomed

Your first task should be to see if it's a hardware problem. No point installing Windows 10 at a cost if that doesn't help.

As I reread your post and see "took like 2 minutes to finally do it" and the "got stuck on 1 of the installations" I'm leaning more towards a failing HDD so it's not just SLOW but could also be causing corrupted data.

So I'd start by using a different HDD or SSD... even if it's an old, slow one just to test for now. Make sure the current HDD is physically disconnected (both rear cables).

It's far less likely to be a bad SATA cable but i can't rule that out easier.

False.
There is no "30 day" requirement.

It used to be like that for WIn 8.1 and earlier.
Win 10 has no such 30 day time limit.

I have a long running Win 10 Pro, Unactivated (no license key), installed in a VM to test exactly this.
Installed Dec 8 2016. 508 days so far, still running with no change from Day 1.

The (small) limitations start on Day 1.
No customization of the Desktop or Taskbar.
A randomly appearing nag text at bottom right, overlaid on top of everything else.
