Is there a Intel i5 8400 out there that has no thermal paste?

Or does every come with a cooler. I'm going to use my own cooler

Thermal paste is typically pre-applied to the heat sink. If you're using your own cooler, you will want to apply a new layer of thermal compound/paste.

Yes, you will have to. The pre-applied thermal paste is on the CPU cooler, not the CPU. You will either have to buy your own thermal paste and apply that on the CPU, or use the paste that comes with your new cooler, IF it comes with any(not all do). Sometimes some coolers also come with paste pre-applied, so you'll have to find out which one applies to you.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you, but I have a tube, each of MX-4 and AS-5. Either will serve your needs just fine.
