The wiring for my old thermostat has only three wires (black, white, and red). On my old thermostat only two wires were used - the white and red. Would the black be a ground and thus hooked up to the "G" with the white hooked up to "W1" and the red hooked up to "Rc"? Thanks.

You should look at the board on the furnace that the wires are hooked to. That board may have the standard labeling.
