I want to make a usb connected hard drive independent of the on board drive. So that one is not recognized by the other. Choose one on boot.

Solution
A couple of suggestions:

- go into BIOS and and have it set to boot from the internal first then USB. When you want to use USB, go into BIOS and disable the internal drive. When internal OS is running, don't plug in the other drive.

- use full drive encryption on both drives, and respectively don't decrypt the other when one is running.
