Older CPU vs newer

What is the main diffrence between an older quad core CPU like the I5 2500 or the AMD Phenom II x4 B97 and the newer CPUs like the Intel Core I3 8100 or Ryzen 3 except the higher clock speed and faster ram support.

Not only can clock frequency be higher but the work the cpu can do per clock cycle is also significantly higher (IPC). This makes each core far more powerful on the new cpu’s.

This just general performance differences without looking at other things such as power efficiency, amounts of cache, etc.
