Hi,

Recently i purchased a Dell T5500 Precision Workstation from ebay. While adding 2 (250gb) Hitachi hdds and creating raid 1 volume and trying to install VMware ESXI 6.5. It is showing 2 drives rather than 1 raid volume.

So my query is is it software raid or hardware raid onboard Dell T5500 Precision Workstation ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Its software RAID, you are using the onboard Intel RAID which is a software based solution, VMware will not see that as a single volume in RAID 1, you will nee a real RAID controller.

My understanding is that RAID 0 which involves striping will produce 2 drives that are seen as 1volume. But Raid 1 is a backup scheme that would show 2 drives. One the primary, and the 2nd as backup.
