Hello,

So I am upgrading my computer to an new architecture (basicly upgrading my CPU and adding an SSD). The thing I want to do is to move Windows to the SSD and keep most of the files that are on the HDD. I am using Windows 10 which was upgraded from Windows 7.
My questions are the following:

What is the best method of doing such a thing?
Do I need to clone the HDD and how do I do so?
Do I need to do a fresh instail of Windows? And do I need to get a new Window Key for that?

Would appreciate if i got a step-by-step guide for doing it.

Thanks in advance :)

Migrate your windows activation to your Microsoft account will allow you to install your win10 on the new hardware without needing a new license or doing the win7 to win10 upgrade again.

Next step is to backup your current system to an external device. You never know when you remember you had something you want back later; like a game save or emails.

A fresh install of Windows, drivers, and applications is recommended esp if you are changing platforms (Intel to AMD or vice versa) But now that you have a backup, it doesn't hurt to try the old drive int he new system as-is.

To migrate only the OS to an SSD, keeping all the other stuff on the old harddrive, involves a 3rd party program. The only one I have experience with is Paragon's...

The only one I have experience with is Paragon's "Migrate OS to SSD" and is a paid app but these days there are a few free alternatives such as Minitool's Migrate OS to SSD and Aomei's Backupper.

Again, these can fail so do no skip making the backup if you don't already have one.
