Computer started shutting down and/or restarting while gaming

EDIT:
---------------------------
MAY HAVE POTENTIALLY FOUND THE PROBLEM:

I decided to closely monitor temperatures in multiple scenarios while in game and they all resulted in normal temps and usage percentages EXCEPT when I opened nvidia geforce experience with shadowplay running in the background. CPU % went from 25% to 100% I quickly turned it off because I'm pretty sure it would restart again.
---------------------------

My PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bcztpG

My computer restarts 1 to 4 times in a row when playing games. It only started happening recently. It first happened when I was playing Sims 4 about a month ago, then today when I was playing Battlefield 1, and today when I was playing Rocket League. I turned it back on and launched BF1 again to check my cpu % and temp: it was at 100% and around 69 degrees Celsius and my GPU looked fine. I just use msi afterburner to monitor RL temps and it looks completely fine:

GPU ~60c ~60%
cpu ~44c ~24%
ram ~4100MB

However.. It was off for a while (so it was cool now..) and then I turned it on, and while it was just idling, it randomly shut off, tried to turn on for a second and immediately shut off. ???? What?!

I have no idea what that means.. is there a power issue?

Why did this start happening out of nowhere?

Only one thing has changed recently is that I got a PS4 and had to start using an HDMI splitter for my monitor (one to pc, one to ps4). I doubt that that is the issue, but I thought I should mention it just in case...

Also, it doesn't happen EVERY time I play.. it hasn't happened for a good 3 weeks or so. It hadn't happened the whole day while I was playing Sims 4 or Rocket League, UNTIL I cleaned my pc about an hour ago (with a datavac) and it started happening again. I thought maybe some cables were loose, but no.. I made sure they were all tight, turned it back on, went into rocket league, and it crashed again.

Sometimes, it will turn off for a few seconds, then it will try to turn on, but fail immedietly and shut off, then same thing a few times and then it turns on successfully.

I am SO confused.

The PC draws more power under load. I suspect you simply have a low wattage power supply unit that can not deliver stable voltage under load. Take the side panel of you pc case off and read the information on your powers supply to find out what make and model it is! There are voltage regulators on the motherboard as well, but if one of those were faulty, you would have problems even when not gaming. Looking forward for you reporting back on your psu!

Shadowplay puts the graphics card under stress, but I would still recommend checking your power supply!

Hi zoltan,

Thanks for your reply. I put my pc specs in the description, but here is a link to my PSU: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sQbp99/seasonic-power-supply-ss650km

I do not believe it is under powered.

I just tested BF1 and I had high temperatures without shadowplay, and 70 to 100% (average 95%) gpu usage and cpu was near 70 or 80% and shadowplay on didn't change much.

I guess my cpu just needs an upgrade or an overclock? Potentially gpu too

(i only played for about 10 minutes and it did not restart but i'm sure it would if i played longer)

I am actually not sure about the thermals -- I would have to re-monitor to make sure.

And no I have not run a memory test. Memory test for the gpu or ram? RAM seemed fine. I was only using 4.1GB out of 16 in RL and it was fine in BF1 as well.

I bought the PSU in May of 2014. Is that considered old?

Everything (Aside from my keyboard, mouse, and cpu fan, which were bought more recently) was bought in May 2014.

Power supplies usually last 6-10 years. Of course they also serve as a surge protection and therefore they take the first hit if you have a fluctuation in your electrical network in the house. To test the hypothesis you could borrow a psu and swap it in to see if the problem still persist.

While PSU's are supposed to last longer, yours is also relatively old, and could be the reason.

Check your temps once again. Clear out your PC for dust.

hmm, i'll check again. And my pc gets dusted quite often. It's always dustless lol
