Running Dual GPU

I recently upgraded my old Asus Strix GTX 970 to an EVGA 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 in order to get more fps in a particular game. I want to use both GPUs so my 970 doesn't just collect dust and I would also like to achieve over 70 fps in the game.

Would it be possible to run dual gpu? I have a MSi 970 Gaming Motherboard.

If you have an MSI 970 motherboard, then you have an FX CPU. It is holding you back. Adding another GPU won't change anything and the 970 would only be useful on secondary monitors.

You cannot use two different gpu to activate SLI. They both should be the same - for gtx 970 it's gm204, for gtx 1080 it's gp104.
