I just returned a Dell 8930 refurbished for power supply fan noise. I love the unit, but i was getting a CONTINUOUS fan noise. It came on as soon as i turned on the computer and NEVER went off. I'm considering a NEW one this time, but a little hesitant because of this problem. Is this normal for the 8930, or do you think i just got a faulty unit?

It's like whooshing air. I had a Dell 570 before this one, and could hear the fan come on when it needed cooling, which i thought was normal and it never bothered me. It would come on for maybe 15 seconds or so, then go off. The sound i was getting with the 8930 was the same noise, only CONTINUOUS.

If it's just a whooshing of air it may not be any different unless the fans/case/heatsink/powersupply were caked with dust.
Did you check to see if the fans/case/heatsink/powersupply were full of dust before you returned it?

It's also possible that there was a different thermal spec setting in BIOS or Dell program. These settings are usually limited to custom parts and not normally found in OEM computers though.

I actually had a Dell technician look at it twice before returning it. He finally said the Motherboard may be bad, and to send it back for service. I figured i may as well return it for a refund, just to be sure. I guess i'm just wondering if i should get another 8930 or go with something else since now i've been reading about this model having a loud fan. I don't mind the loudness of the fan if it comes on, if it would only come on when needed, and not run all the time.
