Hi everyone,

So I've been thinking of upgrading my dual gtx 660 to a gtx 1060/1070. But after looking at certain benchmarks I'm not really sure what to do. So here a few questions:

-I've seen people with benchmarks of far cry 3 at ultra settings not even getting 60fps. I've been running it with my 660 sli and I get over 60fps. Why?

-Is there a significant performance difference between my current graphics card and a 1060?

-If I want to play 1080p 60fps max settings for all current games, should I be looking for a 1060 or a 1070?

Just for reference, I'm furthermore running a Intel Core i7-6800k and 16GB of DDR4.

Thanks for the Input!!!

Hi, I had 660 SLI for about a year, upgraded to 1060 6Gb OC Edition and yes, the difference is noticeable. But only in games where you need more video RAM, for example PUBG benefits from 6gb even if you play at FULL HD resolution. X-com 2 was better, as SLI with that game gave me slight issues, but this is game related issue, however it was important for me as I like the game. Counter-Strike no difference at all, I think I didn't even notice any difference between 660 in SLI mode or just 660, let alone 1060 -) Witcher 3 I can max up with 1060 with better FPS and not be limited by the 660 2gb RAM. So basically the games which use a lot of VRAM will benefit for sure, I suppose GTA for example will definitely benefit. So that would depend...

Hello i just recently upgraded my GTX 960 4GB graphics card for a Asus Strix 1070 and it is the best decision i ever made. a 1060 will get you the 1080p 60fps you want, but spending a little more money on a 1070 will give you more frames and basically 2560×1440p resolution on games.

So that would depend on which games you actually play and what are you trying to achieve here?

What CPU are you running? Because when I upgraded the CPU the difference in games was way more noticeable than when I upgraded the graphics cards. I had 2500K running 4.7Ghz and I upgraded to the plain i7-2600 - no overclock, which at first I thought won't be worth it, but it was worth it as many modern games use 8 cores and benefit from extra 2mb of Level 2 cache, so for example in Witcher 3 in a city with many people around you the difference was over 10Fps...

Your question about far cry, it could be due to the different setup of the graphics settings as well as different CPU, in my case I had the identical PC to compare 660 SLI and 1060 6Gb from Asus and don't forget different DRIVERS.

I wouldn't say that the upgrade was definitely worth £280 which I paid for my graphics card, but I didn't like a lot of noise from SLI setup and as I mentioned already some games just not very friendly with SLI setup in the first place. I upgraded when the 1060 just came out, so the price tag wasn't as bad as it is now. The graphics cards as well as RAM are badly overpriced at the moment so just wait till next year it will drop in price.

Unless you suffer in certain games, If I were you I would just wait till next year as:
1) New graphics cards will come out and 1060 will drop in price
2) Make sure you get 6Gb version as it's not just about RAM it's actually faster than 3Gb as well.
3) Get the ASUS OC Edition, they overclock really well, I push way over 2ghz on my GPU easy and if fact there isn't a single game I need this overclock for now (at least the ones I play at Full HD), but it's nice to have a massive boost if needed
4) Asus OC edition 1060 6Gb is very cool, so no noise at all, barely any heat, I mean the card is soo cool compared to the 660 that it stays really cool even under the overclock I barely have 55C on average, probably the max I had was 60C and I wouldn't even push the fans to 100%.
5) Next year 1070 will drop in price so you might want to consider that if the price difference between 1060 and 1070 will be around 10-15%.

I fix the PC's and laptops for a living as well as build the gaming rigs, so I have quite a lot of experience within the IT industry -)
