I have a 9 month old pc. I built it myself, it has worked fine for 8 months. Over the last month, the headphones have gained a high pitched whine. There has always been some static, but it is unnoticeable when other sounds are playing. However this high pitched whine hurts my ears. It also persists when the headphone is unplugged even though the static cuts out immediately. After leaving the headphones themselves unplugged for a week, the whine disappeared. It reappeared within seconds of replugging it in.

All my devices are plugged into the same powerboard except the ethernet cable. The headphones are connected through a soundblaster 5.1 omni external sound card, and the soundblaster itself is plugged into the back of the computer directly. I recently managed the cables so no cables seem to be touching. I don't mind the static at all, I specifically want to eliminate the high pitched whine.

Solution
1. Are you sure you don't have tinnitis? Basically, can anyone else hear this whine?

2. If you're sure you don't have tinnitis, try adding a RF choke to the headphone cable. It's rare, but possible for unshielded cables like headphone cables to act like an antenna and pick up stray RF noise and convert it into audible sound. A RF choke is a magnet which makes it more difficult for RF emissions to cause electrons to move along the cable, making it a less effective antenna.
