if my dell g7 gaming laptop calls for ddr4 2666 MHz sodimm ram, can I use 2400 MHz ram instead? the reason is because 2666 MHz ram is very expensive and not much of a variety.

Solution
Allmost 100% accurate rules is that downgrade speeds is easy, upgrade is harder. ram will downclock itself, but cannot become faster.
MOBO and ram will find "common ground" and i'm 99.9% sure that if 2666 is there then at last 2400 and 2133 will also work. (100% sure 2133 will work)
any stick of ddr4 ram should be enough.
You can use slower, same, or faster memory, as long as it is the same type (DDR4 SODIMM). Faster memory will revert to 2666 speed. However, some laptops are very picky about memory. Do not mix different modules if possible and consult the QVL list for memory for your laptop.
