Improve mismatched ram speeds?

Hello!

I have 2 sticks of ram, first one 8 gb and the second one 4 gb for a total of 12 gb ram.

The thing is that when I put them both in, the speed of the first one, the 8 gb, dropped to 1333 MHz when it was supposed to be at 1600 Mhz.
It's not much of a difference and I wanted to oc them but I have no idea what to do cause I've never went in to the "magical realm of ram and stuff".
I have them on single channel and I was wondering, is it worth to keep 12 gb ram at slow speeds or have only 1 stick of 8 gb at higher speed and even maybe overclock it.

To be honest, I don't know what I want to get at, I'm mostly asking for ideas of what can I do with these sticks and how can I use them the most effcient way.

I'm running these sticks on a pc with:
CPU: Fx 8370
MBO: 970A-UD3P
GPU: R9 280x 3gb Oc

It's a pretty old build, I know, but it gets the job done and I'm satisfied with the fps that it gives, but if I can take it even further why not.

If possible you should have a matched set of dimms to work properly at the desired speed, same manufacturer and comes in a kit. Nothing you can do to improve the speed with both dimms installed and the speed difference isn't that dramatic.
