Download speed decrease from 1gbps to 100mbps after installing dataswitch (windows 10)

My problem.

I have a 500 mbps internet connection. When I plug in my (cat 7) cable directly from the router my computer it works fine. Speedtest 500 mbps download speed.

When I put in an unmanaged dataswitch between the both (1gbps, tried tplink sg-1008d AND netgear gs105ge) my download speed decreases to 100 mbps. And this happens on 2 computers, with different modem adapters. I think I have tried all adapter settings, but it doesn't work and drives me mad. I have put in money for a cat 7 network in my house and just get 1/5th of the speed I should get.

Please, help me out. It must be some stupid bug in Windows 10.

You will need to try multiple cables be sure to swap all in the path. It almost has to be a cable problem when the equipment has gigabit ports. This is all negotiated between the equipment at a very low hardware level. Other than the cables you only have the ports in the equipment. Make sure your pc is set to auto. It is highly unlike it is a driver issue this negotiations is done at a very low hardware level.

Some ethernet cables can be defective but some equipment tolerates out of spec cables more than others. Would be much easier if the cables completely failed.

There is lots of fake cable on the market. If you search common sites like amazon you find all kinds of cable that is CCA ( ie aluminum) that is not...

Question about your post: "And this happens on 2 computers, with different modem adapters."

Did you mean to say "network adapters"? Please verify. Thanks.

What Ethernet cable(s) are you using between the switch(s) and router?

Are those cables Gigabit rated? And known to work at Gigabit speeds?

As I read your post you have one Cat 7 cable that is working. I.e., the cable you used to connect your computer directly to the router.

When you add in the switch, then a second, additional Ethernet cable is needed.

Is that cable proven to work at Gigabit speeds? Speedtest results being likewise 500 mbps download as the direct computer to router connection demonstrated.

There is lots of fake cable on the market. If you search common sites like amazon you find all kinds of cable that is CCA ( ie aluminum) that is not certified ethernet cable. It works for shorter distance on some equipment. There are even companies selling so called cat7 cable that admit in their ad that it will only run 1gbit....you only buy cat7 if you are running 10gbit it provides no benefit when you run at gigabit speeds.

Not sure how to get quality cable anymore, I saw so called cat6a cable in a walmart store that was that flat thin cable. Having wire size smaller than 24awg automatically means your cable is not certified. You want to look for EIA/TIA markings on the sides but there is some china made cable that has that even though it is CCA cable.
