Hi

I 'm looking to buy some desktop DDR3 and was looking on ebay, noticed some relative cheaper ram modules from a Chinese company, but then read the description and it reads "AMD only dim" or "for AMD", sometimes it has a sticker directly on the module with the same claim.

Here is the item description:
8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz 240pin DIMM Desktop Memory for AMD Motherboard
(I chose not to link the direct listing so nobody thinks I 'm trying to traffic sales or anything of this sort)

Honestly they look like normal Intel modules to me.
Is this some BS Chinese attempt to upsale on the "Intel" version modules? or is there something behind this claim "AMD only" ?

Solution
That was an example of compability issues, DDR3 is pretty cheap for 2x4GB and even cheaper for 2X2GB config in my country 2x4GB is around 50$ and 2x2GB is well 20-30$.

There aren't intel specifc dimms either. It will be because AMD used DDR3 until 2017 whereas intel dropped support at skylake in 2015 with only a few boards having support for DDR3.

I highly suggest you, dont ever, ever buy from China cheap ram, they mod the ram speed , basicly they overclock them and that kills them fast and has bad compability (usually with DDR2).

As for Intel and Amd only, im quite unsure about that, but I can guess its about ram size per chip, soo if the ram is 2GB and on one side of ram is 256MB per chip and there are 4 on both sides thats 2GB now depending on platform size per chip can cause instability, or even not booting at all (for Intel side)
Or long story short Amd is less picky about what ram you put it in as I've explained from "As for...".

Can't be brand specific RAM is standardised. Only outlier is apple compatible ram and that's an OS thing.

No, you never bought an cheap ram from China, I googled mine 10$ 1GB DDR2 800MHz ram chips (Chips on the ram stick) and on google it gave me kingston 667MHz, and thats my proof from not buying from China cheap rams which is usually with DDR2 since the program that codes the ram exists.

As for What I've said about ram compability Amd is less picky about that.

Even an Apple ram can work into desktop, even So-dimm ram or laptop ram can work into desktop, its all about compability.

Well yeah all apple ram can work on desktop not all ram works with apple

And whats your point? I've linked you and you didnt even read it, I had and still have couple of 775 PC's, 1150, 1155 and 478, and I can say ram compability and Amd and Intel only ram , and ram banks/chips can be an issue.

And to @Brucealmighty, what is your current CPU or motherboard?

But it's not purely AMD/ Intel it's a generational gap of DDR3

It is a ga-g41mt-s2pt paired with Q6600 (bsel mod OC to 3.0ghz) and 4gb ddr3 1333.
I might put a Q6700 (bsel mod OC to 3.3) or Xeon E5450 on it in the future but currently I 'm just looking to upgrade the ram to the motherboard max 8gb.

Just a couple of minutes ago I found a decent looking ram on Aliexpress, Chinese brand but comes sealed in a factory package, instead of the really cheap that comes in a made up wrap, so it looks legit. Described as 8gb 1600ghz 1.5v fits all motherboards - for 52-54usd (2X4gb modules, 1X8gb cost a bit more).

Never mind about what I found, seem like that is the price more or less for 8GB ddr3 (~25usd for 4GB module). I also saw on Ebay some used of high brand names, but the shipping prices put me off and I can't find something in my price range due to it.

So if I understood correctly I should avoid any Chinese 'could-be-fake' double sided ram and only look for 4gb 512mbx8 one sided modules. But on the thread you linked some posted this motherboard only supports 256mb chips, which is strange and would make this board only support 4gb total instead of the 8gb specified on the company site support page.
