Computer randomly restarts while playing games and Furmark

The problem:
I built my computer close to 2.5 years ago and haven't had any problems with it until around a month ago. I've had this game called Dauntless since August and never had any problems when I would occasionally play it. Then all of a sudden when I went to play it after not playing for a while, my computer randomly crashed. When I say crash I'm talking it instantly shuts completely off, no bluescreen or freezing just instant shutdown and after a second it automatically turns back on again as if I had just turned it on. Even worse is that it generates no memory dump so its been hard to figure out what's causing this. Soon it began crashing within minutes of starting the game frequently and has even crashed while playing League of Legends twice pretty recently which I've played a ton and never had a problem with. Also possibly important to note is that recently when I alt-tab back into League the screen stays black for a few seconds instead of just instantly showing which it's also never done before. And when I run Furmark test my computer instantly crashes usually without even showing the image.

What I did to try and fix:

  • Monitored temps of GPU and CPU before, during, and after crashes and all were perfectly fine.

Tried putting my friend's 600W PSU and my brother's 650W PSU in my rig and neither even turned my computer on which I find super odd and possibly important because my PSU is 650W.

Tried each stick of RAM individually and still crashed both times.

Updated my graphics drivers to each previous one all the way back to when I first got the game when there was no problem and it crashed every single time still.

I've completely reinstalled Windows to fresh settings with no files. Still crashed

Checked the voltages going through my PCI and 24pin cables and all were in acceptable ranges and didn't fluctuate.

I've also put my friend's GTX 970 GPU from a different brand in my rig and my comp still crashed.

And finally the closest I came to a fix was when I took out my GPU and just tried using my integrated graphics which ran like shit obviously. But I was able to run Dauntless with no crashes for as long as I wanted and Furmark didnt crash at all, but Im not sure what to make of this considering it crashed with 2 different GPU's.

PC specs:
CPU: Intel quad-core i5 - 6500
PSU: EVGA 650W GQ 80+ Gold
Motherboard: ASROCK H170M Pro4
GPU: Zotac Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
RAM: Crucial 2x4gb DDR4

I've wanted to fix this issue for weeks now and I can't even figure out what's causing it so help is very much needed.

Solution

Pascal was hugely focused on efficiency, so even the GTX 980 draws more power than the GTX 1080 TI. So it still may be the PSU, I would recommend you upgrade that PSU anyways. If you do try your 970, assuming you didn't sell...

Well, I think it might be the motherboard if changing the PSU didn't fix it, the GPU wasn't the cause and the memory was still good, and the CPU and integrated graphics were fine, the only thing left to test are the drives and motherboard, but seeing as the drive got a fresh version of windows and didn't die or hiccup at all I don't think that's the issue. Try taking a good look at your motherboard, check for bulging capacitors or burn marks, anything unusual. I would take the PC to a shop and have the motherboard tested, or if one of your friends has a motherboard that supports your CPU try swapping the motherboard and see if the issue persists.

The thing is im not sure if the PSU's worked because they weren't even able to start my computer so idk what to make of that especially considering one of them was the same wattage. And nothing seems unusual with my motherboard at all. Could updating the bios fix this? I've heard both things for and against doing it but I feel like it might be a last resort. Also worth noting, since reinstalling windows ive been able to play the game for 1 or 2 matches before it crashes which is significantly longer than when it was crashing right after launching.

Interesting, I wonder if it could be your drive failing when it has to access a certain sector of the drive. Do you have a spare hard drive or ssd lying around you can install windows and games on to test? I still think it may be the motherboard but it is worth a try to test the drive before spending a lot of money on a new board.

So i borrowed my friend's hard drive and it still crashed. So i guess that clears it being a hard drive issue. When in BIOS it's frozen a few times now so im not sure if thats a potential motherboard problem or if i should update BIOS.

You can try a BIOS update, I doubt that will fix it though. I think it is the motherboard, you should get it tested after the BIOS update.

Yup still crashes even after BIOS update. Damn I was hoping that would work lol.

Does your motherboard have another full length PCI-E slot? Try a different slot.

Yes I already tried that with no success unfortunately. I'm thinking about just buying a new motherboard since a repair would cost as much anyway.

That seems like the best option. But first can you test your GPU in another pc, like a friends or an older desktop you have lying around.

Update: So i got a new motherboard and the same issues still persisted unfortunately. I also tried my gpu in my friends pc and when I went to open google chrome i got a white screen and then it crashed and restarted in a similar way to what it did on my pc. Im thinking its most likely the gpu at this point and will probably buy a new one tomorrow since mine is no longer under warranty.

Ok, sounds like that may be the issue, what wattage was the PSU in your friends PC?

His wattage was 600 and my brothers is 650(same as mine). When I used the 600W it would start for a second then turn off and would never be able to fully start. The 650W just didnt turn it on at all. Im assuming these 2 problems are for reasons other than the issue going on with my pc though.

This just boggles my mind, all the symptoms point to Motherboard or PSU failure, with the PSU not starting properly, and crashes under any sort of load.

After installing the new ZOTAC Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb GPU I havent had a single restart since and can run furmark with no issues. Seems like it was the gpu after all! Part of me does still wonder if it could potentially still be the power supply since this gpu takes 1 less PCI cable than the 970 possibly signifying less power draw? But regardless everything works so Im not gonna question it unless I have another issue. Thanks for the help @jacobweaver800. Hope this thread helps anyone else having this problem.

If you do try your 970, assuming you didn't sell it already, and if it works you can try and sell it or compare the two for the faster card. Most likely the 1060 tho.
