Hi, I seen many tier list of psu online but I don't know what is tier and what is tier list? I know about wattage, continues vs peak, 80+ bronze, silver, gold, platinum, Chinese capacitors and Japanese capacitors and many other things but what is tier 1, 2 and 3 ?

Solution
If you are referring to the Linus website, Tier 1 meaning the best of the best.
Every manufacturer makes lower grade and high grade.
For instance
Corsair - AX, AXi, HXi, RMi, RMx is Tier 1 - the best the make
Corsair - VS "orange units" is Tier 6 - still branded Corsair, but the components used are not as great as Tier 1.

Personally, I have a Tier 1 PSU, and I would agree with Linus' assessment for my PSU

Yep, it's an estimate of the QUALITY of the power supply solely based on a breakdown of the components and user feedback etc.

Tier 1 is arguably not needed, though it may also be considered as an investment as a good model should last more than ten years.

THIS IS OLD (not sure where newer is) though many on the list are still sold:

Some recommended PSU's: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-psus,4229.html

*When I bought my PSU I was also looking at fan noise. I decided on an ECO MODE (fan turns off below 50% load) as I've discovered many PSU's have fans louder than needed and I hate extra noise.

My i7-3770K + GTX1080 build uses roughly 325W when gaming so I went with the EVGA G2 750W (Tier 1) and discovered the fan was far too loud so I'm glad it had ECO MODE.

My first one died in two hours. Ironically I bought it because I was worried about the reliability of my 7-year-old PSU... SIGH!

That's just statistically bad luck and meaningless though. My 2nd one has run perfectly.

Alot of the time, it is just someone's (with little PSU/electrical knowledge) gut feeling of how a PSU compares to others in terms of "quality", after reading the conclusion of the review. Though they don't state what makes the PSU go in each tier specifically/ what are the guidelines for the tiers, and they're mostly outdated and missing units.

The only half decent tier list is the one at LinusTechTips. But it shouldn't be relied on, only as a quick reference to how interesting a PSU is. You still have to examine the price, competing PSUs at the same price, compatibility with your system, noise if that's an issue.
