Massive fps drops in games for no reason

My laptop has been acting a bit odd lately as I was suffering from huge frame rate drops which is making my games completely unplayable. I noticed that this problem has also affected older and less demanding games like Splinter Cell 2 where the Frame rate drops from 80 to less than 10 and it stays like that for sometimes for a few seconds and sometimes for minutes. I thought it was happening due to a graphic driver update so I installed the previous version but with no difference.

7th gen Intel Core I5 7200u
DDR3 Nvidia Geforce 940mx 2Gb
8Gb ddr3 ram
1tb hard drive
1080p monitor
I usually get 60+fps on 2013 Tomb Raider with medium settings at 1366*768 40+ Fps on rainbow six siege at 1080p low

The performance and game settings are dependent on the optimization of the game

It is highly unlikely because as I have stated earlier this problem also affects less cpu intensive games like the 15 year old Splinter Cell 2 along with the newer games. I check my Task manager very often and the only background processes I see are Mainly steam, Uplay, some Nvidia, intel and windows processes with the touchpad driver.

I benchmarked the cpu temp with GTA V and the maximum temp was around 60 degrees as I use my laptop in a cool environment

Might be because of vsync try turning it off ( cause it mostly tries to cap ur frames ) Also turning high performance demanding settings like Msaa , Nvidia Tsaa , also motion blur .. Also Do tell me The utilization of ur Graphic card and cpu when u r gaming not in the menu but in the battlefield .. Along with thier temperatures . For monitoring will prefer MSI afterburner !

My Cpu temp does not go above 65 degrees and I don't really try to use demanding graphic settings which includes mostly the nvidia gameworks features or heavy anti aliasing like msaa. As for benchmark I chose Tomb Raider 2013 where the max fps was 70+ and the minimum fps was during the fight sequences where the minimum was 43. But due to this problem the fps dropped as low as 8 making it unplayable. Recently I saw this problem take effect on other apps like chrome where the youtube video would start stuttering even after completely loaded

This condition could be a possibility of indicating a dying CPU ! I really won't suggest a street test at this moment cause it can make things more severe but at the same moment you might consider on opening your laptop and cleaning the dust by taking of the fan with which the heat sinks are connected maybe that could be the possibility of this drop in performance !

You might be right as I don't see any thermal throttling indicating that the cooling systems are okay but the exhaust is placed in an awkward place which might be blocking any dust to be blown out by the fan

Especially in a case of laptops . well if you are going to clean that dust i will suggest to take apart everything but make sure to first unscrew the heat pipes over gpu and cpu and then take out the fan with and then dust it out !

To everyone here the problem mentioned above in the heading has been fixed after I cleaned and reset my pc. But a new problem arises as after reinstalling microsoft netframe, direct x and all that I am still experiencing the 0xc000007b error even after reinstalling the games
