I plugged out my LAN cable to test something, but now it doesn't work anymore

Okay, the title is a bit vague, but let me explain.

I live in a kind of studio apartment/college dorm, it's a Danish thing. I've asked around, and apparently Denmark's one of the only countries that have these. You basically have to be undergoing education to live here, but the place isn't connected to any schools.

But the problem is, I pay for my internet through the rent here, and you have to either use your own router(as in go out and buy one) or your own ethernet cable which you plug into an outlet in the wall. Now when I initially moved in I had some trouble getting it to work, but after plugging and unplugging several times it finally worked. I had to test a used router I got from my father however, but it didn't work. So I plugged the cable back in the wall and into my computer, and now it just won't work.

I've tried repeatedly plugging and unplugging like I did the first time, but nothing's happening. Is there anything I can possibly do about this? I've asked for assistance from the managers and stuff here, and the IT guys, but they always end up forgetting no matter how often I ask them.

Solution
First be certain that the Ethernet cable connecting the wall outlet to the computer is working. Use a known good cable.

Second, take a look inside the Ethernet wall outlet. Look for any markings. An Ethernet wall jack would be RJ45 and may have some standard color code such as 568A or 568B.

The cable providing network service to your studio apartment is made up of 4 sets of two wires each. Different colors and twisted into pairs.

The wires are force fitted in-between small metal teeth. If not properly done or if the wall outlet has become loose the wires can become partially or totally loose.

Here is a link that will provide some information for you. There are other similar links to be found...

Please remember that there is similar connection on the other end of that cable serving your studio apartment. Probably via what is known as a patch panel. The punch downs on that end could also be the problem. Or some damage to the cable run between the patch panel and wall outlet.

Try to find the patch panel. Should be centrally located somewhere near where the other services enter the building: electrical, telephone, internet (ISP).

See what you can find and learn.
