B350N ITX mobo won't post with 2200G

What's the secret to getting the onboard video going? I had to install my Ryzen 1800 and a graphics card to get to the bios, and was pleasantly surprised to see a bios version that theoretically should work with the 2200G out of the box (version F21).

Only it doesn't. With the 2200G installed the fans start spinning but it never posts, and no video is ever output.

Hunting around the bios with the 1800 installed it does not appear to have any options for displayport or hdmi output from the mobo, only PCI-E, which I assumed was because it has a CPU installed with no integrated video.

Solution

OK, I think you may have a bad APU or the outs on your board are dead. I recommend a Ryzen 5 1600x and you can get a cheap GPU off of eBay, I bought a Radeon HD 5450 for testing PCI-E slots for about 10 dollars, you can get one for around 5 right now.

Check for a BIOS update for your board, it may have a BIOS update that is supposed to support it but it could be reporting it is F21 but it may not be or there could be a bug or something not working the the 2200g.

Depending on when the board was made, it may not have had the necessary BIOS revision loaded before being shipped. As such, in order to flash the BIOS, you need a first gen Ryzen chip to do it as you've discovered. Once you perform the update, you should be able to drop in that 2200G without any issue. You can look here for more info:

Edit:

What board are you using, specifically?

I did remove the gpu along with the 1800, reinstalled the 2200 and got nothing.

I have the latest bios on a usb stick and plan on flashing the bios as soon as I get a chance but the version according to the bios is from 2/18 and should support the 2000 series chips, as per the gigabyte support page.

Should I leave the gpu in place next time? I’m mildly concerned the 2200 is a dud but it was almost certainly fresh from the factory. Seal was in tact and no signs of thermal paste on the die.

What GPU is it, I don't see the point in upgrading to an APU if the GPU is already faster.

F22? I'm not sure where you're seeing that. I was looking at the following page, which has F10 (12/2017) as the bios needed:

https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/GA-AB350N-Gaming-WIFI-rev-10#support-cpu

Seems the 2200GE needs F22 or later. I believe (but am now having doubts) I have a 2200G.

If there's a more up-to-date page I should be looking at please let me know. This is my first gigabyte ;-D

I borrowed the GTX 950 from another computer. Borrowed the 1800x from yet another computer. Let's just say my kids are not happy with me at the moment lol.

Lol, I see then. Well were going to try and help you as fast as we can. From what I saw above the APU needs the F22 BIOS revision to work properly so your going to need that 1800x again to flash the BIOS to the newest version and that should fix it all. Let us know if you have any more issues after the BIOS update.

No joy. Updated to the latest bios sucessfully. Boots fine with 1800x. Tried with 2200G, both with and without GPU installed, and no luck. Fans spin but nothing else.

I'm going to try returning it to amazon (the CPU that is - everything else seems to be ok), and bite the bullet, head over to frys for non-apu Ryzen. I'll get some used GPU to fill the gap for now.

Thx for the assistance all.

It is almost certainly something with the motherboard. I went to Fry’s electronics and picked up a 2400 G and that too doesn’t post. I’m going to pick up a 1600, and do as you suggested and get a cheap graphics card to hold me over until the prices come down. Thank you everyone for the assistance.

To my understanding you have a decent power supply, if you have 20 or 30 dollars to spend you can get a decent older GTX card or higher end Radeon card like a 4870, I got a 5450 because I didn't have a power supply capable of outputting more than 250 watts max. the 5450 is like a 16w card.

Most motherboards do, any news on a GPU purchase? It's fairly easy to get older cards on eBay, give us a shout before buying one, a decent older card can be had for under 100 USD on eBay these days.

Just using the integrated for now. It's pretty underwhelming. If prices ever drop I'll get something but it's a work computer so it's not vital (until about 4pm every day lol).

On the lighting front, it's almost too easy now. My first build was with an athlon 950 in 2001 or so. Had to custom cut a window and add a molex connector to a light I found on ebay. But it looked pretty cool ;-D

Start looking around for a GPU, pricing is very close to MSRP now. I saw a GTX 1070 for MSRP earlier this month, take a look on newegg and other sites, make sure you don't buy one thats off brand, stick to the majors like EVGA or Founders Edition cards.
